Are you a bee or are you a fly?

When God describes the promise land to His people He says in Exodus 3:8 that it is “A land flowing with milk and honey…”. As a matter of fact, honey comes up quite a few times in scripture like in Psalm 119:103, when the word of God is compared to the sweetness of honey.
God’s Kingdom is like that of bees: organized, communicative, productive, making something that is precious to others.

Bees produce, they have a language (yes, they communicate to other honey bees with a special bee dance!), they care for their offspring, and they can defend themselves. Each plays a role in survival of their community.

Contrast the purposeful and structured existence of honey bees with another insect, flies. The Hebrew word for flies “zebub” comes from the verb to” zig zag”. Imagine a creature with no direction, living in chaos. Flies don’t have a home or a language, they don’t produce, don’t take care of their young, and have no weapons to defend themselves.

Is your life about having a beautiful and purposeful existence creating a product that benefits others and brings them joy… or is it just about flying from one pile of dung to next?

Are you a bee or are you a fly?
