Communication

“The greatest problem with communication is the allusion that is has been accomplished.” – George Bernard Shaw

People talk but they don’t always communicate. The majority of the problems you come across in relationships go back to this. Listening is the most essential, but often the least utilized, aspect of communication. Understanding comes with listening. Often people don’t feel heard, so they rush to get out what they want to say. There should be a balance in the conversation between listening and speaking.

Proverbs 18:2, “A fool does not delight in understanding but only in revealing his own opinion.”

Proverbs 18:13, “He who gives an answer before he hears, it is folly and shame to him.”

Proverbs 12:18, “There is one who speaks rashly like the thrusts of a sword but the tongue of the wise brings healing.”

Do you listen? Are you using words that are beneficial? Are you communicating in ways that will help move the situation forward? It’s easier to get defensive and prideful rather than listen to someone.

James 1:19-20, “This you know, my beloved brethren. But everyone must be quick to hear, slow to speak and slow to anger; for the anger of man does not achieve the righteousness of God.”

The best way to get to the truth is hearing what the other person has to say. You’ll be a better participant in every relationship if you listen. Then when it is your turn to speak, communicate lovingly with words that help the situation.
