Giving it up for God
As we approach Easter, many people think of Christ’s sacrifice. But what about you, do you sacrifice, give up, anything for God?
When people think of fasting or having something removed from their life, they often think of only what they’re giving up and the pain of the sacrifice. But it’s not a punishment. There’s a connection between giving something up and growing closer to God. It removes the barriers that keep you from God. It reminds you of the gifts in your life and from where they come. There are so many distractions – electronics, tasks, activities – that pull you away from God. The purpose is to get your focus back on Him.
The Father is there and He wants your attention. Doing these things brings Him back into the center of your life. Although when you think about fasting you often think about abstaining from food, fasting can apply to other things as well.
1 Corinthians 7:4
The wife’s body does not belong to her alone but also to her husband. In the same way, the husband’s body does not belong to him alone but also to his wife. 5Do not deprive each other except by mutual consent and for a time, so that you may devote yourselves to prayer…
It is important that when you do fast from something that you do it for God, not for personal gain or praise.
Matthew 6:16-19
When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show men they are fasting. I tell you the truth; they have received their reward in full. 17But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, 18so that it will not be obvious to men that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
When YOU give something up freely, it bonds you to God. It’s an ever present reminder that God is the most important thing in your life. What are you willing to give up, if only for a short time, to bring you closer to God?
